Johanna Faust, a mixed race Jew, prefers to publish pseudonymously. She is committed: first, to preventing war, ecological disaster, and nuclear apocalypse; last to not only fighting for personal privacy & the freedom of information, but, by representing herself as a soldier in that fight, to exhorting others to do the same. She is a poet, always. All these efforts find representation here: "ah, Mephistophelis" is so named after the last line of Christopher Marlowe's Dr. Faustus, whose heretical success flouted the censor for a time.

Not Another Reason to Hate: Israel, Ethiopian Jews, Birth Control Shots, and the Ghost of Eugenics

A certain story has been making the rounds.  Israel 'admits' to 'forcing sterilization' on Ethiopian Jews. I cried when I read it, but now I wonder if it is true.

Most often quoted is Salon, so it is excerpted here:

Israel admits Ethiopian Jewish immigrants were given birth control shots
An Israeli journalist also found that most of the women given the shots say they were coerced

By Katie Mcdonough for Salon

Israel has admitted that it has been giving Ethiopian Jewish immigrants birth control injections, according to a report in Haaretz. An Israeli investigative journalist also found that a majority of the women given these shots say they were administered without their knowledge or consent.

Health Ministry Director General Prof. Ron Gamzu acknowledged the practice — without directly conceding coercion was involved — in a letter to Israeli health maintenance organizations, instructing gynecologists in the HMOs “not to renew prescriptions for Depo-Provera for women of Ethiopian origin if for any reason there is concern that they might not understand the ramifications of the treatment.”

[snip]

Gal Gabbay, an investigative journalist who had interviewed 35 Ethiopian immigrants, found that while the women were still in transit camps in Ethiopia they were sometimes intimidated or threatened into taking the Depo-Provera shot, often being misled about why. “They told us they are inoculations,” said one of the women interviewed. “They told us people who frequently give birth suffer. We took it every three months. We said we didn’t want to.”

[snip]

...But Ethiopian Jews remain a marginalized group, often living in highly segregated communities. Because of this, many women’s and immigrant rights advocates believe that the 50 percent decline over the past 10 years in the birthrate of Israel’s Ethiopian community is the result of the Israeli government’s attempt to limit and restrict Ethiopian women’s fertility through forcible birth control injections....

There are those Protocols-of-the-Elders-of-Zion nutjobs (they are forgeries: get over it) who of course have a field day with this. A few things bothered me -- like, how did  the government enact or enforce such a decree?  You know, logistics.  The coordination needed was a Nazi eugenicists' wet dream, and seemed unlikely.  Then I was directed to the following, from a rather sane pro-Israel blogpost (despite the racist undertones in the title, "Mizrahim in Israel are movin' on up."

THE FOLLOWING INSPIRED THIS POST.  READ IT.

IT WOULD BE WISE EVEN IF IT WAS NOT, OR WAS ONLY PARTIALLY, CORRECT.  I THINK IT IS MOSTLY IF NOT ALL CORRECT: I THINK SALON WAS WRONG.  AGAIN.  AND FALLING FOR IT MAKES ONE LOOK IGNORANT, OR WORSE.

INVENTING EVIL PERPETRATED BY THE STATE OF ISRAEL IS... UNNECESSARY.  ENTIRELY
UNNECESSARY.

.....ahem.  By way of illustration, a report to the class:

What I Learned Recently About Dimona.

Dimona.

You know, Dimona -- the town on the edge of the desert where gloweth the nuclear power plant of the same name, yes, that Dimona, Vanunu's Dimona, un-IAEA-inspected Dimona, slip-the-workers-some-uranium-orange-juice Dimona, the nuclear power plant with the dirty open secrets underneath.

A hundred fifty or so warheads worth of international war crimes out of which grows all the insane guilt driven paranoid finger pointing at, and fear mongering over, Iran (3% to 20% enrichment, useful as fuel for power plants, on the one hand.  On the other, the 98% purity needed for uranium to be weapons grade.  Pretty easy to tell apart, I hear.  From space. )

'Israeli reactor linked to WB deaths'

A view of Israel's Dimona nuclear reactor

Dramatic increases in cancer cases, sterility and abnormal births in south of the West Bank is said to be linked to a uranium leak at the Dimona nuclear power plant.

In villages located in the south of the West Bank, cancer cases, sterility and mental disorders have surged, particularly in the Avaria village, which has a population of over 35,000 people. International scientists have investigated the anomaly to find out the reason is behind it.

Why am I going on about Dimona?

Guess who lives there? From Wikipedia:

Black Hebrew Israelites (also Black Hebrews, African Hebrew Israelites, and Hebrew Israelites) are groups of people mostly of Black African ancestry situated mainly in the United States who believe they are descendants of the ancient Israelites. Black Hebrews adhere in varying degrees to the religious beliefs and practices of mainstream Judaism. They are generally not accepted as Jews by the greater Jewish community, and many Black Hebrews consider themselves—and not mainstream Jews—to be the only authentic descendants of the ancient Israelites. Many choose to self-identify as Hebrew Israelites or Black Hebrews rather than as Jews.
[snip]

As of 2006, about 2,500 Hebrew Israelites live in Dimona and two other towns in the Negev region of Israel, where they are widely referred to as Black Hebrews

[snip]

When the first Black Hebrews arrived in Israel in 1969, they claimed citizenship under the Law of Return, which gives eligible Jews immediate citizenship. The Israeli government ruled in 1973 that the group did not qualify for automatic citizenship, and the Black Hebrews were denied work permits and state benefits. The group responded by accusing the Israeli government of racist discrimination. In 1981, a group of American civil rights activists led by Bayard Rustin investigated and concluded that racism was not the cause of the Black Hebrews' situation. No official action was taken to return the Black Hebrews to the United States, but some individual members were deported for working illegally. Some Black Hebrews renounced their American citizenship to try to prevent more deportations. In 1990, Illinois legislators helped negotiate an agreement that resolved the Black Hebrews' legal status in Israel. Members of the group are permitted to work and have access to housing and social services. The Black Hebrews reclaimed their American citizenship and have received aid from the U.S. government that helped them build a school and additional housing. In 2003 the agreement was revised, and the Black Hebrews were granted permanent resident status.

Funny thing, isn't it.  Happens to be where all the schvartzes from America who so thought they were descended from Moses that they had to live in Israel got settled by a State who didn't believe them.

New Genetic Study Reportedly Proves Khazar Ancestry For Ashkenazi Jews

Ashkenazi Jews are a mix of genetic ancestries, far more of which than previously thought originating in tribes from the Caucasus – a region that sits in between Eastern Europe and Asia between the Black and the Caspian seas, Reuters reports. Those Slav, Scythian, Hunnic-Bulgar, Iranian, Alan and Turkic tribes formed a confederation that created the Khazar empire – which at its height stretched from Kiev in the west to the Aral Sea in the southeast.

Members of those tribes, thought to be primarily from the upper and merchant classes, converted to Judaism in the 8th century CE, a new genetic study has found.

Those conversions are believed to have been sparked by a small number of Jews with origins in the biblical Land of Israel who traveled to the region.

[snip]

After more than 500 years, the Khazar’s empire collapsed in the 13th century CE due to Mongol attacks and the Black Death. Many Jewish refugees fled westward into Eastern Europe, becoming the bulk of what we know today as Ashkenazi Jewry.

Known as the Khazar Hypothesis, it had previously been dismissed by geneticists whose studies often contradicted each other and which often seemed to be geared to proving a preconceived notion or desire – near-unadulterated ancestry from ancient Judea – rather than discovering the truth.

That led geneticist Eran Elhaik of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland to try to reconcile those conflicting studies. And that led him to genetic data that he believes proves the Khazar Hypothesis is accurate.

Elhaik found ancestral genetic signatures that pointed clearly to the Caucasus. He also found such signatures that pointed the Middle East, but to a far, far smaller degree.

“We conclude that the genome of European Jews is a tapestry of ancient populations including Judaised Khazars, Greco-Roman Jews, Mesopotamian Jews and Judeans. Their population structure was formed in the Caucasus and the banks of the Volga, with roots stretching to Canaan and the banks of the Jordan,” Elhaik claims.

Previous genetic studies appeared to support the Rhineland Hypothesis, which posits that Ashkenazi Jews descended from Jews who fled the Land of Israel after the Moslem conquest in 638 AD, settling in southern Europe and slowly working their way north. 50,000 supposedly later moved from the Rhineland into eastern Europe in the later Middle Ages.

But there are serious problems with the Rhineland Hypothesis – so serious that some of its proponents actually posited a Divine miracle to account for them.

For example, the population of Eastern European Jews surged from 50,000 in the 15th century CE to about 8 million by the start of the 20th century – a birthrate 10 times greater than the local non-Jewish population that surrounded them. That implausible population surge would have had to take place despite the economic hardship, wars and pogroms that ravaged those Jewish communities, and the plague that ravaged the entire region.

Another problem with the Rhineland Hypothesis is Yiddish, the language of Eastern European Jews.

“Yiddish, the language of Central and Eastern European Jews, began as a Slavic language,” Elhaik notes. It was classified as a dialect of High German later....

Money, I suspect, is money.  Spends equally as well in exchange for a stay in the cancer ward of an Israeli hospital no matter what color the skin of the spender.  In theory, that is.
Moses did have an Ethiopian wife: what makes European Jews more Jewish? Ancestors that converted, more Jewish than those whose ancestral scions' DNA wends its way back in an unbroken chain?   In one of history's savviest moves, in a brilliant gesture of political fence-sitting, the Khazars conjured an escape from the Scylla of Christendom, on the one hand, and the Charybdis of the Caliphate, on the other -- in the process becoming a much needed buffer, according to Wikipedia, that saved Papal ass.  But --  the chosen Chosen People?

Nothing is so cut and dried.

Looks like, from the sanest overview of the subject, it's some from column A, some from column B, and even a little of what's behind the unfortunately not so lily white door number three.  Whew.  Good thing. I was worried, had begun to wonder who I was for a second.  Looked at my skin and thought, wait a minute, maybe all those generations before me were delusional.  Wanted to be Jewish for the... status symbol.  All the rage: makes you popular.  Like shouting "My God has a bigger dick" through a bullhorn up and down the streets of Benghazi Friday at sundown, while sporting a bad depiction of Mohammed on a sandwich board.  Like touring Harlem or East Oakland on a Segway at four in the morning, wearing a shirt that says "Representing," under the likeness of Robert E. Lee, on January 19th, (yes, that's the same January 19th), shouldering an old radio blaring "Proud to be an Okie from Muskogee."  In blackface.

Please feel free to concoct better examples and submit them as comments.  This blog will thank you, unless of course you are a troll, or racist, or spam.

Be seeing you.
